The Newcastle United Blog | One of the positives from yesterday’s Newcastle draw
Paul Dummett finally returned to Newcastle’s line-up yesterday, and one of Newcastle’s most underrated players put on a solid game on his return.
It was as if he had never left.
Although Dummett may not be the greatest left-back going forward, he is a tough defender and has often been praised by former manager Rafa Benitez for his contribution to the hometown club.
Unfortunately, Dummett has ongoing injury issues, mostly hamstring issues, and it was the first game of the season after being injured with a “thigh problem” since last summer.
Here’s what the boy from Kenton said on NUFC TV:
“Everyone in the dressing room knows how important it is. I’ve been in this situation before at the bottom of the league and every game is like a cup final now.
“This game was a missed opportunity. We know a team that draws is not going to keep us in the league and every game that happens is a missed opportunity.
“Today was a big missed opportunity with the luck we had and we didn’t take the three points.”
“We need to assess and then train hard next week and hopefully we can take three against Leeds next week.”
“I’m happy to have been on the pitch, but ultimately it’s a team game and we didn’t win, so that’s the most disappointing thing.”
So we expect Dummett to stay in the side and give Newcastle some defensive solidity at left-back.
But after yesterday’s bitterly disappointing result, our owners need to bring in – possibly four more players – within the next 15 days, if we are to survive another ignominious fall in the league.
We cannot let this happen.
