Matt Targett has had a good start on loan with Newcastle United. He started both matches he was eligible for. His exploits at West Ham over the weekend earned him a place in Alan Shearer’s Team of the Week.
Long may it continue as the 26-year-old has been superb as a new left-back. Hopefully, at the end of the season, his loan spell will almost have the impact of Joe Willock’s last term.
Willock has been outstanding scoring 8 goals in 14 appearances, including 7 for 7 in the streak. Although Targett’s impact may not make the headlines, his defensive acumen has already made a huge difference.
Targett was asked about the hopes of many Newcastle supporters that his loan spell will become permanent this summer, a la Willock. That is what he said NUFC Television:
“It’s just a matter of focusing here and now for now.
“I only focus on my own performances and helping the team make sure we don’t get relegated. That’s the most important thing.
“Whatever happens after that happens. I really enjoy my time here.
This is a very diplomatic response from the tenant. Although he had a sly smile on his face during his response, we’ll see what happens this summer.
Targett’s goal, as he said, is to keep this club in the Premier League. Since his arrival things have gone wonderfully with Newcastle picking up 7 points from 3 games to climb out of the drop zone.
The left-back believes Newcastle are in good stead with the right mentality to continue climbing the table. He had the following to say about the team’s current state of mind:
“I think we are in a very good position right now. The manager works well with us and we responded as players.
“It helps when we are close to each other. We go into every game believing we can win.
Newcastle have the opportunity on Saturday to move up a few places with a win at Brentford. That’s one of the goals as Newcastle have pushed back some of the clubs that a few months ago looked out of reach.
Here’s what Targett had to say about Newcastle’s chance to climb higher in the standings on Saturday:
” It is enormous. Since I arrived, I have always watched the teams above us. With the group of players we have here, we should move up the ranks.
“Saturday is a great chance to do that. I hope we can, but we know it will be a very difficult game.
Of course, the situation is not all rosy in the Newcastle ranking. Burnley climbed to within two points with one game less. It means a defeat coupled with a win for Burnley at Crystal Palace will see Newcastle return to the bottom three.
Targett was asked about the recent increase in clubs under Newcastle. He believes Newcastle can only control their performance and must be ready for a tough game on Saturday:
“It’s a big thing in football, you can only control what you can.
“The rest will take care of themselves, no matter what the other teams do.
“We know that everything is in our hands. We have to be ready and it’s going to be a tough game.
