Sebastian Polter to double as Bochum clings to Augsburg victory
A brace from Sebastian Polter earned Bochum all three points in Augsburg, despite a heated second-half riposte that almost won something in Augsburg after a three-goal halftime deficit.
Augsburg 2-3 Bochum
Goals: 0-1 Polter 22 ‘(assistance: Asano), 0-2 Holtmann (40 ‘), 0-3 Polter 45 ‘+ 3 (pass: Löwen), 1-3 Gregoritsch 58 ‘(pass: Caligiuri), 2-3 Caligiuri (feather 86 ‘)
Ruben Vargas returned to his usual position on Augsburg’s left and it was unsurprisingly the main source of the home side’s attacks. The first danger came from the right, however, with a cross from Raphael Framberger met on the fly by Andre Hahn, who struck right on Michael Esser. Polter scored Bochum’s first effort of the game off the left upright. Bochum was a threat at the break and wasted no time jumping over a mistake in midfield with Takuma Asano throwing the ball through for Polter, who hit Rafal Gikiewicz as he entered the penalty area. Hahn missed a glorious equalizer opportunity before Bochum doubled their lead from scratch. Gerrit Holtmann connected perfectly with a left corner to send an unstoppable shot past Gikiewicz. The worst was to follow for Augsburg when Andi Zeqiri had to be replaced by Michael Gregoritsch due to an injury five minutes before the break, and as if that wasn’t enough for the Bavarians already, Polter scored a third goal from a corner kick from Eduard Löwen on the stroke of Halftime.
After conceding two from corners, Augsburg showed their own strength on such a free kick and brought in a goal when Gregoritsch led into a Daniel Caligiuri corner. Less than a minute later, halftime substitute Jan Moravek sent the ball over an open goal from close range as Augsburg missed the opportunity to further reduce the backlog. Another mistake in midfield gave Holtmann a clean run on Gikiewicz’s goal, but he couldn’t turn the screw as he shot wide. It was a huge defeat for Augsburg and one they almost immediately capitalized on with Vargas and Hahn both creeping closer together, before Caligiuri’s effort was diverted. Vargas missed another rock-solid chance before Sergio Cordova missed the best opening yet, blazing with just Esser to beat. With a helping hand from Cedric Soares, who climbed over Florian Niederlechner in the penalty area, Caligiuri reduced the deficit to one goal before the last five minutes, but despite their best efforts the Bavarians failed to equalize. while Bochum held on.
