BLOG: When an Instagram-worthy vacation goes wrong

If you’re like me, your social media feed has recently been filled with vacation photos. From sandy beaches to mountains to national monuments, there are countless Instagram-worthy picture-perfect photos to see online.

Recently, on a trip to the mountains, I had hoped to get a good photo, too. “What better way to get a social media-ready photo than on a rafting adventure? I thought.

So we were there. Rafting down a river – not even one of the more advanced rapids – while waiting for my photo moment in the sun. When suddenly, our raft got stuck on a rock. Despite our rafting guide’s best efforts, our raft overturned and we all fell into cold water.

Now, with all that heat wave, the cold water was actually refreshing; and the moment was humorous, once we were all ashore. But I never had that perfect photo moment.

Has this ever happened to you too? I’m not just talking about your capsized boat. I mean, did your long-awaited Instagram moment go wrong? Or maybe worse, that “dream vacation” or experience you had in mind was totally ruined by bad attitudes, wrong turns, or other misfortunes.

It seems like it happens often in life. We each fall into pits, some serious, some less serious. For some, it is our own sin that has led us into a pit. For others, it was bad luck. Still others, bad people doing bad things put them there.

Either way, when this happens, remember that the Lord is watching over us. The Bible says in Psalm 40:1-4:

I waited patiently for the Lord; He turned to me and heard my cry.

He pulled me out of the slimy pit, mud and mire; He put my feet on a rock and gave me a firm place to stand.

He put a new song in my mouth, a hymn of praise to our God. Many will see and fear the Lord and put their trust in him.

Blessed is he who trusts in the Lord, who does not look to the proud, to those who turn away to false gods.

I love these verses. Notice that when we cry out to the Lord in despair, it is He who lifts us up. It is he who installs us on solid foundations. Not only that, He puts a song of praise on our lips.

Has your life gone wrong lately? It could be in your relationships, your finances, or your health. Whatever pit you find yourself in, call on the Lord in prayer for help. Count on Him to save and restore you.

When you do, you still might not have an Instagram-worthy photo. But you will instantly find yourself in a better boat, following His will and His Word.
